963,140. Multiple image devices. M. GROSSE, and A. CARSON. Oct. 17, 1962 [Oct. 27, 1961; Dec. 4, 1961] Nos. 38634/61 and 43369/61. Heading G5C. Indicia are formed by gaps in a reflecting surface 3, disposed behind a semi-transparent mirror 2, and/or are arranged between 2 and 3 in register with gaps in surface 3, or behind gaps in surface 3 and visible therethrough, and are illuminated by light source(s) 6, means being provided to vary the colour and/or intensity of illumination. A viewer, to the right of the mirror, sees a series of superposed images of the indicia. Solid transparent or translucent indicia may be placed between mirror 2 and surface 3 aligning with the gaps therein. The gaps may be backed by coloured paper bearing indicia, or indicia marked on endless bands may move behind the gaps. As shown, a spinner rotated by the hot bulb 6 carries a transparent member 11 bearing coloured or opaque strips 12. The flickering effect may be enhanced by a sheet 13 of patterned glass. Instead of the spinner, a motor may drive an endless chain bearing opaque or coloured strips. The light source(s) may be switched by a thermal circuit breaker. Surface 3 may be a mirror, polished metal or be formed on the rear surface of mirror 2. The front surface of mirror 2 may bear indicia An additional semi-transparent mirror may be inserted between the viewer and surface 3.
