The cargo space of a freighter for oil or ore is divided into separate holds by transverse bulkheads 7. Each hold has a separate floor 4, supported on the ship's bottom by members 5, which ends short of the bulkheads 7, or ship's side plating, and is connected thereto, below the neutral axis X-X, by inclined plates 6 having resilient connections 8 and 9 so that none of the longitudinal forces acting on the outer skin of the ship's hull will be transmitted to the floors 4 of the holds. The plates 6 may be rigidly connected to the bulkheads 7, or ship's side plating, and extend into close proximity of the floors 4, or hinged connections may be used.
