Abstract

Fluorobins of formula <FORM:0962860/C4-C5/1> in which R1 and R2 are H, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy and rings A and/or E may have further fused rings are quaternized on one or more ring nitrogen atoms by heating at 150-200 DEG C. with alkyl- or aryl-sulphonic acid esters or other alkylating, cycloalkylating or aralkylating agents such as dialkyl sulphates or p-toluene-sulphonates, with or without addition of an inert diluent. Specified compounds are fluorobin and 2,9(10)-dichloro-, -dimethyl- or -dimethoxy-fluorobins quaternized with dimethyl sulphate; and fluorobin and 2,3,9,10-dibenzofluorubin quaternized with diethyl sulphate. U.S.A. Specification 2,495,202 is referred to.ALSO:Cotton materials mordanted with tannic acid, leather and acrylonitrite polymers are dyed or printed with a composition characterised by the presence of a fluorubin of formula <FORM:0962860/D1-D2/1> which is quaternised with alkylating, cycloalkylating or aralkylating agents on one or more ring nitrogen atoms and in which R1 and R2 are H, halogen, alkoxy or alkyl; rings A and/or E may have further fused rings. Other specified ingredients of dyebaths are sperm oil alcohol/80 mols ethylene oxide reaction product, acetic acid and optionally (a) sodium sulphate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, potassium bromide or potassium iodide, or (b) tannic or phosphotungstic acid; sulphonated sperm oil alcohols and quaternary amines of palm oil are also mentioned. Other specified ingredients of printing pastes are crystal gum thickening, thiodiethylene glycol, tartaric acid, and sodium sulphate, acetic acid and the sodium salt of the sulphate of sperm oil alcohol/80 moles ethylene oxide reaction product.
