Abstract
Slag is removed from a converter 2 in a slag bucket 14 (see Fig. 2) carried by a truck 7 which is driven by its own motor along a track 6 extending at right angles to the pivotal axis 1 of the converter and which has a lifting mechanism, e.g. comprising an arm 9 which pivots at point 8 on one end of the truck, the arm being raised and lowered by a hydraulic ram 11 and having a forked end 10 projecting beyond the other end of the truck, for raising the bucket to the converter mouth 15 when the converter tilts to pour slag into the bucket. The arm 9 may also extend rearwardly (see Fig. 8) beyond its pivot point 8 with the rear end carrying a counterweight 25. <PICT:0962593/C6-C7/1> <PICT:0962593/C6-C7/2> The truck and bucket are preferably arranged to travel beneath the converter when the lifting mechanism is lowered. Another truck (see Fig 3, not shown) for carrying a ladle for molten steel may also run on the track 6. The slag <PICT:0962593/C6-C7/3> bucket truck 7 may be arranged to act as a base lifting truck (see Fig. 10) for replacing the converter base in which case location means such as three circularly arranged projections 22 (shown in Fig. 8) are provided on the arm 9 for centering a second lifting mechanism, e.g. a hydraulic lifting cylinder 29 with piston 30, for use in raising and lowering a converter base 32.
