Abstract
Textile materials of natural or regenerated cellulose are dyed or printed with water-insoluble reactive dyestuffs that advantageously contain at least one -OH group by applying an organic/aqueous padding liquor or print paste that contains the dye in true solution and wherein the organic solvent is a ketone or ketone-like product containing no -OH groups, and effecting fixation by treatment with an acid binding agent at any stage of the process. The specified ketones and ketone-like products are acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, dimethyl sulphoxide, tetramethylene sulphone and dimethyl formamide. The padding liquor or print paste may contain up to 50% by weight of the organic liquid and may advantageously contain the acid binding agent (many specified) as well as neutral salts and other adjuvents, e.g., urea and carboxylic acid amides of low molecular weight. Fixation may be achieved by the application of steam or dry heat or by prolonged storage optionally with rotation at room or moderately raised temperature. The dyes to be used in the present process are free from -SO3H and -COOH groups and advantageously contain an -OH group as well as at least one reactive group (many specified)., they may be from the stilbene, azine, dioxazine, xanthone, thioxanthone, nitro, phthalocyanine, anthraquinone and especially azo dyestuff series, the latter of which may contain a metal atom. The process may be applied to materials of viscose, linen, viscose staple and especially cotton. Examples of padding and printing are given. In Example 6 the reaction accelerators 1:4-diaza-bicyclo- (2:2:2)-octane and dimethyl hydrazine are coemployed.
