A continuous casting is cooled in the secondary cooling zone by coolant sprayed through groups of nozzles, each group comprising at least one nozzle from at least two planes transverse to the casting axis, of a device comprising a number of nozzles in each of several said planes, the sequence of the nozzles of one group being cyclically interrupted by nozzles of at least one other group. The nozzles of each group are fed through conduits separately controllable so that the cooling pattern may be varied.
