Abstract

A mixture of benzene, n-heptane and methylcyclohexane is separated by distilling in a first stage to separate n-heptane and benzene overhead from higher boiling materials including methylcyclohexane and separating the overhead in a second stage in the presence of an azeotropic, pseudo-azeotropic or extractive agent which enhances the volalility of the n-heptane. Heat exchange is preferably effected between the overhead vapours from the first stage in a reflux condenser and the reboiler of the second column. The distillation aid may be added to the liquid feed to the second column or added separately; aqueous acetone is specified.
