Abstract

Indene is recovered from mixtures of hydrocarbons containing indene by subjecting the mixtures to azeotropic distillation using furfural as the azeotropic former to remove non-indene constituents in the form of other azeotropes and recovering indene of enhanced purity. The feed mixture may be an oil obtained by fractional distillation of coal tar oils, water gas oils, drip oils which contain in addition to indene, benzene, styrene, ethyl benzene, trimethyl benzene, methyl pyridines, benzonitrile, coumarone, or methyl coumarone. In a preferred embodiment 80 parts of a coal tar naphtha fraction having a boiling range of 135-189 DEG C. is mixed with 120 parts of furfural and distilled in a 100 plate Podbielniak column at atmospheric pressure. A single treatment gave a recovery of 75 per cent of the indene originally present, the product consisting of 90-95 per cent of indene. By reprocessing the small fractions of indenecontaining material boiling immediately below and above the heart cut of indene the recovery can be increased to 85-95 per cent with a purity of 90-95 per cent. Distillation is normally at atmospheric pressure but may be at subatmospheric or superatmospheric pressure.
