Abstract

560,169. Distilling acetone water mixtures. FIFE, J. G. (Shell Development Co.). Feb. 12, 1942, No. 1874. Drawings to Specification. [Class 32] Anhydrous acetone is recovered from mixtures of acetone and water by distilling the acetonewater mixture in a fractionating column into the upper part of which is introduced a normally liquid organic compound which has a greater solvent power for acetone than for water, which boils above 65‹ C., is incapable of forming a ternary azeotrope with acetone and water or a binary azeotrope with acetone under the operating conditions, the liquid being maintained in the liquid state and fed to the column at a rate to maintain a concentration in excess of about 35 per cent by weight of the mixture under treatment thereby obtaining an overhead fraction containing water and a bottom product comprising a mixture of anhydrous acetone and the organic compound from which the acetone is separated. The liquid organic compounds specified comprise benzene, toluene, ethyl tertiary amyl ether, tertiary octyl alcohol, secondary amyl acetate, chlorobenzene, isodecane, and kerosene. The process may be applied to the separation of ternary mixtures, e.g. alcohol, water and di-isopropyl ether by first distilling the mixture with an auxiliary reflux liquid of the kind specified to separate acetone and alcohol at the top of the column and then separating the acetone and the water according to the invention.
