Abstract

Isoprene is separated from a C5 hydrocarbon mixture by a straight distillation followed by two extraction distillations; in the straight distillation isopropylacetylene, dimethylacetylene, methylethylacetylene and pentadiene-1,4 are separated overhead, the bottoms are extractively distilled to separate C5 mono-olefins and the extract is extractively distilled in the presence of further solvent to separate isoprene as overhead from methylethylacetylene, cyclopentadiene, propylacetylene, piperylene and allylacetylene in the extract. The solvent may be acetone or acetonitrile and may contain water. The extract is preferably removed near the bottom of extractive distillation columns, the solvent separated and returned to the bottom of the extraction column and bottoms then recycled from the bottom to the top to supply the solvent.
