A printing press comprises a plate cylinder and an impression cylinder arranged to rotate in either direction of rotation, an ink pick-up roller 16 adapted to rotate in one direction of rotation, an inking drum 25 adapted to rotate in a direction determined by the direction of rotation of the printing couple, inking rollers 18 and 20 for transferring ink from the roller 16 to the drum 25, and two pairs of side plates 22 and 24 for journalling the transfer rollers 18 and 20 respectively, the said plates being mounted for limited simultaneous displacement about fixed axes to bodily displace the transfer rollers so that the roller 10 either contacts the roller 20 or the drum 25. In the latter arrangement the roller 20 functions as a distributing roller with respect to the drum. To accommodate a reversal in the direction of rotation of the printing couple, a power cylinder 42 is actuated to displace a cam member 37 causing cam 36 to rock side plates 22 in an anti-clockwise direction about shafts 33. The plates 24 are rocked by connecting links 60 and the roller 18 is moved from the Fig. 2 position into contact with the drum 25, Fig. 3 (not shown). The shaft 50 of the roller 18 is received at each end in a socket having a fixed portion 46 and a portion 47 pivoted thereto at 51. The two sections are pivotally mounted on an eccentric stud at 52 to enable the contact pressure of the roller to be adjusted. On actuation of a member 54 the roller 18 may be moved out of contact with the adjacent rollers or drum. The roller 20 is mounted in a similar manner to the roller 18. The adaption of the inking mechanism may be accomplished by a push-button.
