The mean radius of pores in a microporous barrier 1 is determined by using the barrier 1 to divide a chamber 2 into two compartments 21, 22. Gas at constant pressure is supplied through a nozzle in which the gas flow is in the sonic region 3 to compartment 21 since the gas output through the barrier is constant the mean radius may be calculated from two measurements taken at close moments of both the pressure differential across the barrier (by gauge 6) and the mean pressure in the compartments. In an alternative embodiment the barrier is of tubular form and the closed compartment 22 can be vented to atmosphere when desired.
