Abstract
Ammonium nitrate with reduced tendency to cake is made by coating crystalline nitrate with a derivative of an amide, a guanidine or a hydrazine having at least one hydrophobic organic group of at least 8 carbon atoms, but preferably an alkyl group of 8 to 20 carbon atoms. Examples of coating substances are mono-octadecylamide, mono-octadecyl hydrazine, dioctadecyl hydrazine, N,N1-bisallylthiocarbamyl hydrazine, mono-octadecanoyl hydrazine, 3-hydroxy-2-naphthyl hydrazide, octadecanoylcarbamyl guanidine, octadecanoyl-carbamyl guanidine sulphate and mono-octadecyl guanidine. The coating is added in amount 0.001 to 0.5 g. per 100 g. of nitrate. It is advantageous to coat the nitrate at above the melting point of the coating agent and allow the nitrate to cool under stirring.
