[Also in Division H1] This invention is alleged to be a monopolar magnetic structure, i.e. one with its surface formed wholly of magnetic poles of one polarity. Among various methods which are described as producing such a structure are the following: (a) the assembly of magnetized members, e.g. hemispheres, to form a hollow body (e.g. a sphere), whose outer surface comprises all south poles (Figs. 1 and 2); (b) the filling of such a hollow sphere with magnetizable particles mixed with a binder through a small aperture, followed by the hardening of the binder and the subsequent removal of the sphere; (c) the assembly of magnetic parts to form a solid sphere; (d) the winding of a magnetic tape into a sphere; (e) the embedding of magnetic pins into the surface of a ball of plastic material. As a use of the invention there is described a frictionless bearing member (Fig. 5) comprising a hollow toroid 19 whose outer surface comprises all N poles. A shaft 21 may be a similar monopolar structure 22 as shown, or an ordinary magnet.
