The consequent movements of a member 81, slidable with the segments 19 and splined to the sleeve 5 rocks a lever 86 a turntable rim-drive idler 95 providing variable-speed drive in conjunction with steps 61, 62 on a motor shaft 9. The idler 95 is withdrawn from operative engagement by a cam means 101 during speedchanging and by a cord-connected means operable when the pick-up arm is swung outwardly of the relevant record edge radii; this latter means may be arranged to hold the idler 95 out of engagement when the gramophone is out of use.
