Abstract

584,747. Magazine gramophones. THORENS SOC. ANON., H. July 7, 1944, No. 13037. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1943. [Class 40 (ii)] In a magazine gramophone for playing records of mixed sizes, the pick-up is lowered in position to commence playing a large diameter record and if a small record is in playing position is ' traversed inwardly to correct starting position by a roller 10 mounted on the pick-up arm with its axis of rotation non-radial to the turntable, the roller being driven by engagement with the rotating record. The pick-up needle 6 depends just below the periphery of the roller 10 and is spaced from the roller by a distance at least as great as the greatest difference in the radii of the records to be played. Thus, on lowering the pick-up, if the pick-up does not land immediately on the edge of the record to be played, it will be swung inwardly till it does, and then roller 10 will be raised off the record. Holler 10 is mounted eccentrically to cause the pick-up to undulate as it is traversed on to a record so that the needle may clear the edge of the record readily. The roller may also be formed with a spiral rib to enable it to ride up the edge of a record, and may be fitted with a spring brake 14.
