Abstract

1,080,102. Record players. ARGUS Inc. April 13, 1965 [April 29, 1964; Aug. 25, 1964], No. 15644/65. Heading G5R. In a record player the loud-speaker, amplifier and pick-up arm are mounted for rotation relative to a stationary record. Housing 11, enclosing speaker 19, drive motor 31, battery power supply, record player amplifier and possibly a radio tuner unit, is mounted for rotation on a pedestal 16. The pedestal includes a circular base portion 21, which fits the centre hole 22 in the record 23, and a vertical grooved circumferential surface 28 which is engaged by the drive wheel 33 of motor 13 to drive the housing about the pedestal and record. An alternative smaller diameter record locating member used for locating the pedestal on records with a smaller centre hole is releasably secured in a compartment at the centre of the bottom surface of the base portion 21. The housing is provided with a jack 41 which receives a keyed plug 42 to which a tone arm support member 43 is secured by a resilient member formed of a piece of tubing. The tone arm 51 is pivotally attached to its support member 43. Insertion of the plug opens the circuit between the tuner unit (if present) and the amplifier and connects the record pick-up to the amplifier. The position of the keyed plug in the jack is such that in the absence of a record the tone arm is disposed at an angle below the generally horizontal position necessary for operation, thus in the operational position the resilient tube connector exerts a torsional force to increase the downward force exerted on the needle by the arm 51. The tone arm support member and the tone arm may be adjustable in length to accommodate different sizes of records. The drive is adjusted to the various record speeds by switching different values of resistance into the motor circuit. Means are also provided, Fig. 7 (not shown), for automatic repeat playing of a record. In a second embodiment using a clockwork motor the motor drive wheel engages the surface of the record, the position of the drive wheel relative to the centre of the record being adjustable to accommodate different record speeds.
