Abstract

961,519. Grinding; mixing. STECCO S.A. DE TECHNIQUE CHIMIQUE. Feb 28, 1963 [March 5, 1962], No, 8140/63. Headings B1C and B2A. A method of grinding solid particles, e.g. pigments, in which the material to be treated is passed a number of times through a grinding machine is characterised in that the successive passes through the grinding machine are carried out in continuous movement on the whole of the material treated, without intermediate extraction, and in that the succession of passes is effected by automatic means in accordance with a predetermined programme. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a grinder 1, a pre-mixing tank 2, a re-cycling tank 3 and a finishing tank 4, a suspension of the material to be ground being passed a number of times from tank 2 to tank 3 and from tank 3 to tank 2, with intermediate grinding in the grinder, until the desired fineness is obtained at which time the treated material is directed into tank 4. The grinder has associated therewith a tank 21 provided with a filter 23. The tanks 2, 3, 4 are provided with motor-driven agitators 8, 10, 12 respectively. The circulation of the suspension is effected by motor-driven pumps 24, 25 in association with piping and valves. The valves are controlled by electric relays operable by contacts 55, Fig. 4, actuable by cams 50 to 53 on a shaft driven by motor 49. The initiation and control of operations is effected from a control desk 43, Fig. 1 (not shown). The cycle of operations and control of circulation are operated by electric probes 44 to 48. Probes 44, 46 control the starting of motor 49 when the level of the suspension in tank 2 falls below that of probe 45, the latter operates to stop the agitator 8. When the level in tank 2 falls to that of probe 44, the programming device comes into operation and reverses the circuit. This causes valves 30 and 41 to close and valves 31 and 40 to open. When level in tank 3 falls to that of probe 46, the latter initiates the reversal of the circuits. The suspension in tank 2 is first deflocculated by running the agitator 8 at high speed and then at low speed before finally stopping it. Examples are described.
