Abstract

1,069,986. Ball mills. U. S. STONEWARE, Inc. Nov. 14, 1963 [Aug. 22, 1963], No. 45089/63. Heading B2A. A mill comprises a vessel 1 containing an agitator 7 and grinding balls 12 the arrangement being such that upon relative rotation between the agitator and the vessel the balls are caused to be frictionally rotated about the centres thereof, and without significant impact therebetween. In the form shown, the agitator is rotated. Alternatively, the vessel may be rotated about the agitator or the vessel and agitator rotated in opposite directions. The agitator has a base 8 and one or more intensifying rings 10. The perimeter of the or each ring 10 may be rounded. The distance between the base and the inner wall of the vessel is such as to allow the passage of ground material but not of the balls 12. The agitator has a blade 16 for agitating the fines. Bulges, the counterparts of the rings 10, may extend laterally from the wall of the vessel. The vessel and grinding balls may be of ceramic and the agitator covered with ceramic. The vessel 1 may be used alone for dry grinding or solid or emulsifying one liquid in another. If a twostage operation is required as in wet grinding, a further vessel 2 is used the liquid flowing from vessel 1 to vessel 2 through an outlet 13 and the ground particles flowing out through an outlet 20 in the vessel 2. In a modification, the base of the agitator has a tapered outer surface and the lower end of the vessel has a corresponding taper.
