An apparatus for finely comminuting solid material and/or dispersing agglomerates of finely comminuted material comprises a chamber 11 containing attritive elements 15 and having a vane member 17 rotatable about the axis of a shaft 16, the minimum distance between the member 17 and the surface 18 and bottom wall 12 of the chamber at any time being at least three times the diameter of the largest of the elements 15. The apparatus is filled through conduit 14 and can be used for batch or continuous operation. The chamber shown has a circular cross-section and the member 17 tapers from the shaft 16 to the side edges 17'. The chamber may, alternatively, have a lobate cross-section and the cross-section of the member 17, which may be solid or hollow, may be circular, elliptical, oval, lobate, triangular, square or polygonal. Further, the member 17 may have a planetory motion within the chamber. Also, the chamber may contain two or more members 17 the distance between which at their closest approach to one another being at least three times the diameter of the largest of the elements 15. The material of the elements 15 is preferably harder than the material to be comminuted. The elements may be spherical balls, as shown, or ellipsoids, cones or tores. Preferably, the diameter of the largest of the elements 15 is between 1 mm and 200 mm. e.g. larger than 10 mm. The elements may comprise sand. Examples are described.
