In an axial-flow compressor, fan or blower, the flow in the space between the rotor and stator blades departs from the axial direction by an angle not exceeding 45 degrees, the ratio of the product of the speed of rotation and the cube of the rotor diameter, measured at the blade tips, to the rate of volumetric flow is equal to or smaller than 50, and the rotor and stator blades are of aerofoil form with a maximum thickness equal to or smaller than 12% of the chord. The first of these conditions ensures that the path d 12 of the gas relative to the rotor and the absolute path d 34 both deviate to the minimum extent from the axial direction whereby the paths are shortened and the flow losses are therefore lowered. The second of these conditions ensures that the blade height is great enough to avoid undue secondary losses. In addition, the size of the machine and the peripheral speed are reduced.
