Abstract

961,327. Packaging separators. DIAMOND NATIONAL CORPORATION. May 5, 1961 [July 12, 1960], No. 16493/61. Headings B8C and B8P. A separator for packaging articles such as glass bottles 44 in multiple unit packs comprises a moulded pulp sheet having hollow pocketforming portions projecting outwardly from opposite sides of the medial plane 22, each portion including displaceable side wall panels 36 positionable in planes normal to the medial plane. As shown, the separator has upwardly projecting truncated pyramids 24 merging with adjacent downwardly projecting truncated pyramids 26 formed by diamond-shaped walls 36 extending on both sides of the medial plane. Perforations or score lines 37 along the meeting edges of the panels 36 allow severance of the panels, which remain unsevered at the bases of the pyramids. Vertical slits 38 near the bases of the pyramids form a hinge connection so that the panels can be opened-up for insertion of the bottles 44 and take up a vertical position between adjacent bottles. The truncated tops of the pyramids may have central holes or diagonal weakened portions forming triangular tips 42. In loading the separator by machine all the pyramids opening to one side of the sheet may be simultaneously loaded and then all the pyramids opening to the. opposite side, or the bottles may be pushed into all the pyramids from one side. The package is completed by an outer wrapping 46. In a modification the panels have longitudinally extending central corrugations for line contact with the bottles. The pockets may have other configurations, e.g. parabolic or spherical segments.
