Abstract

961,297. Mechanical seals. B. R. D. CO. Ltd. Sept. 8, 1960 [Sept. 9, 1959], No. 30725/59. Heading F2B. [Also in Division E2] A seal assembly 16 between the journal 11 and bearing cup 13 of a Hooke's joint comprises a channel-section annulus 18 supported by a shoulder 17 adjacent the junction between the journal and the spider arm 10 and providing a housing for a sealing ring 19, and an antifriction washer 20 disposed between the sealing ring and the rim of the bearing cup. The sealing ring is made of foamed neoprene, cork, or a cork-neoprene mixture and the washer is made of nylon impregnated with molybdenum disulphide, a graphite impregnated synthetic resinous material or polytetrafluoroethylene. To simplify manufacture a sheet of nylon or the like may be provided on both faces of a sheet of foamed neoprene or the like and rings of this sandwich material may be cut for insertion into the annuli 18, thus making it irrelevant which way up the rings are inserted. The annulus has an interference fit on the journal 11.
