Abstract

<FORM:0961062/C1/1> Benzoic acid is separated from the crude oxidation product of toluene, after preliminary distillation to remove excess toluene, by passing superheated steam, introduced through line 1a, through the product contained in vessel 1. The benzoic acid and other volatile components distil over with the steam via line 2a into the heat-insulated vessel 2, leaving a residue of non-volatile components such as dicarboxylic acids and esters in vessel 1. Vessel 2 contains boiling water (not more than 40 Kgs. of water/Kg. of benzoic acid) up to level 4, into which pass the vapours from line 2a. The benzoic acid collects as a molten layer 5 under the boiling water, and the more volatile components, i.e. the toluene residue, benzaldehyde and aliphatic monocarboxylic acids are distilled over with saturated steam at 100 DEG C. and condense in the cooling coil 3b of the cooler 3. The molten layer of benzoic acid in vessel 2 is introduced into a crystallizer (not shown) and allowed to crystallize. Specification 961,061 is referred to.
