Abstract

Benzoic acid is made by oxidation of toluene by means of air in the liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst wherein an aliphatic and/or alicyclic hydrocarbon, or a mixture of aliphatic and/or alicyclic hydrocarbons is/are added to the toluene to be oxidized. Preferably the hydrocarbon or mixture of hydrocarbons has a boiling point or range of boiling points between 100 DEG and 120 DEG C. and less than 10% by weight based on the toluene of hydrocarbon is added. In an example, there is added to toluene 2% of methylcyclohexane and 2% of a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons boiling in the range 105 DEG to 115 DEG C., and the toluene is oxidized with air at 150 DEG C. and 6 atm. in the presence of cobalt naphthenate to form benzoic acid.
