Abstract

Surface active compounds are made by reaction of one or more oligosaccharides with propylene, and/or butylene oxide until a product is formed with a molecular weight of at least 3,000, and reaction of the water insoluble product with a polybasic acid or a functional derivative thereof. The acid esters thus obtained may be neutralized to give amino, alkali or ammonium salts. Examples of oligosaccharides are saccharose, lactose, cellobiose, maltose and raffinose. Examples of polybasic acids and their functional derivative are sulphuric, chlorosulphonic; amidosulphonic, phosphoric; succinic; maleic and phthalic acid. In an example saccharose is treated with propylene oxide in the presence of potassium hydroxide under pressure to give a product with a molecular weight of about 5,000. The ammonium salt of the sulphuric acid ester and the monoethanolamine salt of the maleic acid ester are prepared.ALSO:Surface active-compounds are made by reaction of one or more oligosaccharides with propylene and/or butylene oxide to give an insoluble product with a molecular weight of not less than 3,000 and reacting said product with a polybasic acid or functional derivative thereof. The acid esters thus obtained may be neutralized to give the alkali metal, amino or ammonium salts. Examples of oligosaccharides are saccharose, lactose, cellobiose, maltose and raffinose. Examples of polybasic acids are sulphuric, chlorosulphonic; amidosulphonic; phosphoric; succinic; maleic and phthalic acid. An example describes the preparation of a polyether and the potassium salt of its sulphuric acid ester from saccharose and propylene oxide.
