Abstract

<PICT:0960723/C6-C7/1> Cathodic protection sacrificial anodes adapted to be secured to a supporting surface are provided with an area of passivity on a portion of the anode surface with a reinforcing galvanized steel insert disposed adjacent said portion and projecting from the anode for securing the anode to said supporting surface; said anodes being used in crude oil-carrying tanks of oil tanker ships which receive water ballast when not carrying oil. The area of passivity is provided by coating said portion of the anode surface with a passive-imparting material capable of resisting the action of crude oil for the working life of the anode. The passive-imparting material may be an epoxy resin and the sacrificial anode is made of zinc or an alloy thereof but may be of other materials, such as aluminium. The anode (1) is of triangular or wedge cross-sectional shape having a base (4) shorter than the other 2 sides, said base forming the surface of the anode providing an area of passivity, with the reinforcing galvanised steel insert (3) adjacent said base. The apex of the aforementioned shape may be removed to provde a truncated form (2) having additional anodic surface. The steel insert projects on either side of the anode, the lugs so formed having holes or slots for attaching the anode to a support. The base (4) is coated with epoxy resin.
