Abstract
In the preparation of polyesters containing small proportions of aluminium powder, colloidal silicon or colloidal silica, the finely divided solid is incorporated in a mixture of dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol, together with smaller proportions of antimony trioxide, zinc acetate and triphenyl phosphite, methanol removed by heating to 180 DEG C. in a current of nitrogen, and excess of glycol removed by heating the mixture to 280-285 DEG C. under reduced pressure. The resulting polyester containing the small proportion of finely divided solid may be melt spun into filaments and the latter treated with boiling aqueous solutions of caustic alkali (see Division B5).
