Abstract

Polytetramethylene terephthalate is made by heating bis - (omega - hydroxy - n - butyl) terephthalate at a temperature high enough to keep the reaction mixture liquid but at below 260 DEG C. In examples, ester-interchange between dimethyl terephthalate and 1 : 4-butanediol was effected in presence of zinc acetate and antimony trioxide, the final reaction temperature being 220 DEG C. After removing excess butanediol the resulting bis - (omega - hydroxy - n - butyl) terephthalate was polycondensed at 247-257 DEG C.
