Abstract

In the Provisional Specifications, polytetramethylene terephthalate is made by poly-condensing bis-(delta-hydroxy-n-butyl) terephthalate by heating under reduced pressure in the presence of antimony oxide and titanium oxide. Zinc, cadmium, calcium and lead acetates which were used as catalysts during the preparation of the bis-hydroxybutyl ester are also present. Examples are given.ALSO:Bis-(delta-hydroxy n-butyl) terephthalate is made by an ester-interchange reaction between 1 : 4-butanediol and a di-alkyl terephthalate, a zinc compound or a mixture of zinc compounds which is soluble in the reaction mixture being used as catalyst. The use of calcium, cadmium and lead compounds as catalysts is also mentioned. In examples: (1) and (2), dimethyl terephthalate, or (5) diethyl terephthalate, is heated together with 1 : 4-butanediol and zinc acetate, methanol or ethanol being eliminated, to give bis-(delta-hydroxy n-butyl) terephthalate; Examples (3) and (4) illustrate the use as catalyst of cadmium and calcium acetates respectively. Bis - (delta - hydroxy n - butyl) terephthalate is used to prepare polytetramethylene terephthalate (see Group IV (a)). In the Provisional Specifications, Example (5) illustrates the use of lead acetate as catalyst.
