A uniplanar mattress base comprises a number of narrow inextensible members c, e.g. of metal or wood, extending transversely of and interconnected by a plurality of long, tensioned springs b and forming with a rigid frame a a resilient unit, the inextensible members c extending over the greater part of the width of the frame a. In an arrangement for a double bed (Fig. 2), the frame comprises two or more sections hinged together, as at e, and the unit includes half springs f hingedly linked to permit folding of the unit. The inextensible members c may be resiliently flexible, e.g. of spring steel, and may include apertures g for cooperation with a rod member provided to facilitate pre-tensioning of the springs.
