A bed base 11 has at least one section 12 hinged on a transverse axis 18 and has a longitudinally slidable mattress carrier 15 mounted on the hinged section. Longitudinal slots may be provided in the hinged bed section 12 or the slidable mattress carrier 15, in which are engaged bolts with heads wider than the slots mounted on the slidable mattress carrier or hinged bed-base section respectively. The slidable matress carrier may slide on the hinged bed-base section 12 by means of metal, nylon or other bearings.
