Abstract
960,272. Typewriters. C. D'EVELYNES. Aug. 28, 1961 [Sept. 14, 1960], No. 30890/61. Heading B6F. The type-levers of a typewriter are connected, e.g. by wires 80 to bars 31 which are arranged in groups so that energization of a solenoid 41 causes one bar of each group to be projected to the right, and so that energization of another solenoid 61, of which there is one for each group, causes the projected bar of the group associated with that solenoid 61, to be moved downwardly to operate a selected type-lever. As described, there are forty-eight bars 31 arranged side-by-side in six groups of eight each. Correspondingly, there are eight solenoids 41 and six solenoids 61. Each bar 31 is suspended by means of a pivoted link 33 and a retracting spring 37, and has near its left-hand end a side projection such as 36 or 56, Fig. 3, engaged by a trigger 55 which is operated from a solenoid 41 to project the bar. The solenoids 41 are on two horizontal lines of four, those in one line being staggered with respect to those in the other, and the armatures 42 of the solenoids are connected by links 44, 36 to eight shafts 47-54, extending across the entire width of the machine, shafts 47-50 being above the bars 31 and the remainder below. Each shaft carries six triggers 55 so that energization of a solenoid 41 causes one bar 31 of each group of eight to be projected to the position shown in Fig. 2. Associated with each group is a frame 64 pivoted at 67 and comprising two side members connected by a cross-bar 70 and urged upwardly by a spring 71. The armature 62 of each solenoid 61 is connected to one of the frames 64. The right-hand ends of bars 31 when projected lie beneath the cross-bar 70. Energization of a solenoid 61 causes its frame 64 to be pivoted downwardly so that the cross-bar 70 thereof causes the projected bar 31 in the corresponding group to be moved downwardly and thus actuates the type-bar connected thereto. The bars 31 are guided by a comb 76. Depression of a type-key closes simultaneously the circuits of one of the solenoids 41 and one of the solenoids 61 to cause printing of a required type face, and opens the circuits of the remaining solenoids, the solenoids 61 being shunted by condensers to cause them to operate after the solenoids 41. Specification 960,273 is referred to.
