Abstract

427,370. Typewriters &c. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION, 270, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Bryce, J. W.) May 18, 1934, No. 15126. Convention date, May 25, 1933. [Class 100 (iv)] Relay type-wheel actions; hammer-impression arrangements.-A machine comprising rows of types on a carrier which is moved to bring the types successively into printing position, and is associated with means for printing from selected types as they pass through printing position, is provided with one or more keys each adapted to control the printing of a complete word. In the action shown in Fig. 2, a continuously rotating drum 15 is provided with types 16, each circumferential row thereof being arranged in the order A, B, ..... 9, 0, and being associated with a hammer 33 operated by means including a link 21 which is caused to engage a toothed driving-member 18 when an electromagnet 32 is energized. Each wordprinting key 37, Fig. 7, consists of a depressible plate formed with columns of holes 39 which receive contact-strips 55, there being one column for each character in the word or number represented by the key, and the contact-strips being positioned in accordance with the letter or numeral represented by the column. The key is arranged between universal contact-bars 49, 50, and sets of contact-points 51 .. 54, there being one set for each column of contactstrips. On depression of the key, the contactstrips in each column engage one of the contactbars 49, one of the contact-bars 50, the contactpoint 54, and one of the contact-points 51, 52, 53. The contact-bars 49 are connected to commutator bars 61, Fig. 1, co-operating with brushes 60 geared to the type-drum shaft 14. Alternate brushes pass over successive bars when corresponding types of the three groups A .. L, M .. X and Y .. O respectively are passing the printing point. The contact-points 51, 52, 53 of each set are connected to pairs 51, 52, 53 of brushes which engage one of a series of commutators 58 on the type-drum shaft 14 and are bridged thereby when the first, second, and third groups of types respectively are passing the printing point. The contact-bars 50 are connected individually to the electromagnets 32. The contact-strips 55 that co-operate with the contact-bars 50 are connected to the contact-strips 55 that cooperate with the contact-points 54, and these contact-points are connected to the brushes 51, 52, 53. On depression, the key is latched by means of the armature 42 of an electromagnet 43, and a contact 47 is closed to energize an electromagnet 66 and thereby close a onerevolution coupling in connection with gearing for driving the brushes 60. During the passage of each circumferential row of types through the printing point, the commutator 61 selects one of the three groups of types, and the commutator 58 times operation of the associated hammer to effect printing from a selected type in the selected group. The one-revolution coupling includes a cam for operating ratchetmechanism in connection with a feed-roller 80 for line-spacing a web R on which the words are printed.
