Record-controlled driving mechanism; typebar actions; case-shift mechanism.-In printing- mechanism for a record-card controlled statistical machine of the kind comprising a type-bar or other carrier which is moved for type-selection and case-shift, the type-bar is provided with a plurality of sets of types and is associated with independently operative type-selecting and caseshifting members. In the mechanism shown in Fig. 1, a type-bar 43 carries numeral types A and letter types B, C and is provided with a pinion 39 engaging racks 38, 41 on slides 33, 42. The slide 33 has notches 36 for engaging pawls 34 operated by magnets 35, and is coupled by means of pawls 31 to a cross-head 30 carried by a bell-crank 28 operated by a cam 27 which is driven by the tabulating-motor. Normally the slide 42 is held stationary by means of a spring- pin 49 and when a reading-brush engages a type. selecting perforation N, Fig. 5, in the record card 45 the corresponding magnet 35 is energized and the slide 33 is raised to permit of impression from the selected numeral type in the set A by means of a hamer 46. To permit of selection of a type in the set B or C, the slide 42 is depressed or elevated by means of inclines 53, 73 formed on racks 54, 76 respectively and co-operating with a pin 541 on the slide. The racks 54, 76 are operated by means of multilated pinions 55, 75 driven intermittently by shafts 59, 66 geared to the cam-shaft 25, pawls 56, 77 for coupling the pinions to the shafts being normally restrained by latches 60 operated by magnets 62, 80 controlled by shift perforations R, X in the record card respectively. A reading-brush for the shift perforations is arranged to energize the magnet 62 or 80 in advance, preferably by one cycle, of energization of the magnets 35 by the reading- brush for the type-selecting perforation. When the magnet 62 or 80 is energized, the pinion 55 or 75 is enabled to operate the rack 54 or 76 and the slide 42 is depressed or elevated to permit of subsequent selection of a type from the set B or C. The slide is held in depressed or elevated position by engagement of the pin 54<1> with flats on the racks, and by the spring pin 49. The slide is restored by means of one of a pair of universal bars 71, 84 which engage a projection 72 are operated by cams on the shafts 59, 66. The racks are restored by means of springs 63, 81. The reading-brushes for the shift-perforations may be included in the circuits described in Specification 247,200, an additional rotary commutator being provided for selectively controlling the magnets 62, 80. The commutator is rotated in synchronism with the record - card feeding mechanism and is provided with two sets of contact-studs for establishing the circuits of the magnets 62, 80 when the shift-perforations R, X are presented respectively.
