Abstract
<PICT:0960038/C6-C7/1> A unit for generating gas and suitable for use in the degassing of molten metal comprises a refractory container having a small neck opening 4 and charged with a material 3 which, at the temperature of molten metal, will generate a gas. The container has a heavy base 2 so that when gas issues from the opening 4 the container is driven by jet propulsion towards the bottom of the molten metal; after gas-generation ceases the container rises to the surface of the metal. The material 3 may be a carbonate, e.g. dolomite, or a fully chlorinated hydrocarbon, e.g. hexachlorethane.
