Abstract

[Also in Division Fl] The pressure device of the parent Specification for moving the jaw of a vice is modified by arranging for the head 2 of the pneumatic cylinder 1 to be the fixed member of the vice while the hydraulic cylinder 3 enclosing the head serves as the actuating member when pressurized by movement of a pneumaticallyoperated plunger 6 which slides through a movable piston 4 into a bore 5 in the head and thereby compresses the fluid in the hydraulic cylinder 3. The device, which can be fixed on the table of a machine tool at 9, is provided with adjustable springs 12 for restoring the cylinder 3 upon release of the clamping pressure. The device is controlled by a valve which first admits air through the port 13 to cause the piston 4 to force hydraulic fluid into the cylinder 3 and so effect the initial clamping movement of the latter and then admits air through the port 14 while connecting the port 13 with atmosphere so that the piston 7 causes the plunger 6 to isolate and compress the hydraulic fluid in the cylinder to produce the final clamping movement.
