Abstract

959,726. Reciprocating motors and pumps; turning gear. NEW YORK AIR BRAKE CO. June 8, 1962 [June 23, 1961], No. 22230/62. Headings F1A and F1K. [Also in Division G3] A variable-output, swash-plate pump or motor unit, Fig. 1, is operable as a motor for starting an I.C. engine and as a pump by the engine when started. For starting the I.C. engine, a valve 44, Fig. 2, is opened to connect a constant pressure source 41 to a pressure-responsive valve 52 and to motor inlet 8, the capacity of source 41 being less than the flow requirements of the motor when the engine has started. The pressure moves valve 52 to the right against spring 60 to connect swash-plate tilting motor 26 to pressure to tilt the swash-plate to its motoring position. When the I.C. engine starts, the motor demand exceeds the supply, causing a pressure drop which permits a spring 19 to return the swash-plate to its zero stroke position. When pumping operation is required, valve 44 is closed and fluid system valve 112 opened. The pressure demand of the system causes a pressure fall at valve 52, permitting its movement to the left by spring 60 to connect tilting motor 26 to exhaust so that spring 19 moves the swashplate to its pumping position. The pump output pressure is maintained constant by valve 52 controlling tilting motor 26. For a higher output pressure, the loading of spring 60 is increased by moving spring seat 59 to abut a stop 65, seat 59 being moved by pressure supplied via solenoid-actuated valve 73. During engine operation, movement of the swash-plate to its motoring position is prevented by a stop 34a controlled by a solenoid-actuated valve 91. Specification 873,517 is referred to.
