Abstract

A lubricating oil composition comprises an diphatic carboxylic acid ester lubricating oil, and as additives, (a) a chlorinated di- or polyphenyl containing at least one chlorine atom attached directly to each benzene nucleus, and (b) a tri-aryl ester of phosphorothionic acid, the combined proportions of (a) and (b) forming a minor proportion of the final composition. The ester lubricating oil may be any of the following types: (i) an ester formed from a C3-18 monohydric alcohol and a C4-18 mon basic aliphatic acid, (ii) a di-C1-12 alkyl ester of a C6-20 dicarboxylic acid, (iii) an ester formed from a dicarboxylic acid and a glycol or polyglycol and (iv) a complex ester prepared from three or more ingredients selected from mono- and di-alcohols and mono- and dicarboxylic acids. Examples of these esters are given. Optional ingredients mentioned include polyalkylene glycols and their mono- and diethers and esters, polyacrylates and polyalkylacrylates, phenols (examples given), phenyl a - and b -naphthylamine, diphenylamine, phenothiazine, 3,7-dioctyl phenothiazine, a mixture of phenothiazine and phenyl-a -naphthylamine, benzotriazole, 5-methyl-benzotriazole, azelaic acid, and polydimethylsiloxanes, all of which serve their usual functions.
