Abstract

959,472. Spraying fusible materials. H.M. PRINCIPAL SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE WAR DEPARTMENT. Aug.24; 1962 [May 26, 1961], No. 19068/61. Heading B2F. A spray torch for spraying fusible material comprises a plurality of nozzles 1 and known means for producing a plasma jet from each nozzle, the nozzles being so arranged that the jets converge forward thereof to form a combined jet, means 7 being provided for feeding material 5 from the rear into the combined jet. Each nozzle 1 has a central electrode member 8, separated by an insulating ring 9, and is water cooled. The flow of the combined jet may be smoothed by an additional nozzle 4. In the described embodiment there are four nozzles 1 equally spaced and with their jets converging to the apex 2 of a hypothetical cone. The nozzles' axes 3 may be at a slight angle to the cone to induce swirling into the plasma stream. The material 5 may be a rod or material compacted into rod form, which may be rotated as it is fed. Alternatively a powder or mixture of powders may be fed in a stream of gas or liquid. The minimum number of nozzles is preferably three. The nozzles may be arranged on one hypothetical cone or on the surfaces of two or more coaxial cones of different apex angle. If an additional nozzle 4 is used it may be kept at a negative potential with respect to the nozzles 1 to increase the energy of the plasma.
