[Also in Division F1] Means for locking relatively reciprocable members comprises a bevelled shoulder on one member co-operating with a bevelled segmental locking dog constrained to radial movement only with respect to the other member and movable into, and out of, the locking condition by toggle link means. The piston 2, of an hydraulic jack, working in a cylinder 1 carries segmental locking dogs 3a, 3b in circumferential grooves 23, the dogs being bevelled in the direction of piston movement complementary to bevels 14 on the ends of the cylinder bore. The dogs are constrained to radial movement only by a guidance member 6, having radial faces 61 engaging radial stems 32 on the dogs, secured to the end of a servo piston 53 which has a toggle fulcrum 5 carrying toggles 4 to impart radial locking movement to the dogs under the action of a spring 51. The application of hydraulic pressure to one end of the cylinder, as through inlet 13b, moves the servo-piston 53 against spring 51 to allow collapse of the toggle 4 and retraction of the dogs under the action of the bevels 14, 14b as the piston 2 moves under the action of the pressure; the space 25a behind the servopiston being vented at 22 to the low pressure side of the piston 2. When the piston reaches the end of its stroke the spring 51 together with pressure behind the servo-piston causes the toggles 4 to move the dogs to the locking position. In a modification the dogs are constrained to radial movement by dowels and are moved by wedge members forced between their bevelled ends by toggle links.
