Abstract

959,276. Discharge lamps. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. Sept. 5, 1961 [Sept. 16, 1960], No. 31905/61. Heading H1D. [Also in Divisions G1 and H3] Apparatus for producing a high frequency discharge comprises an electrodeless discharge tube having a bulb 1 of a material exhibiting a high frequency electrical loss and provided with a reservoir chamber 3 containing a vapourproducing substance and a pair of coils 6 surrounding the bulb and adapted, when supplied with electrical oscillations at a suitable frequency, to generate a high frequency field which initiates a discharge in the tube and to heat the bulb walls, the arrangement being such that the discharge intensity is concentrated within a narrow spectral band. The material of the bulb is preferably a borosilicate glass blown to a thickness of 5-10 mils., and a heat-leak path is preferably provided from the reservoir region such as to maintain the region at a temperature which is lower than the discharge temperature. The filling may be krypton at a pressure of 1-3 mms. of mercury with an alkali metal; in a specific example one milligram of ribidium is contained within a bulb of 1 cm. in diameter. Alternatively, krypton-85 may be used with isotopically enriched rubidium. The coils are energized by a high frequency oscillator comprising a pair of triode amplifier tubes cross-coupled through grid-plate capacitors. Specification 959,275 is referred to.
