A fastener device for releasably holding two separable parts of a luggage case or other container in closed condition consists of a bolt mechanism 12 and a catch means 14 engageable thereby the bolt mechanism comprising body member 16 adapted to be affixed to one container part the body member having side walls 21, a bolt member slidably mounted within the body member for longitudinal movement between the side walls 21, one side wall having an entranceway opening 30 relative to which the bolt member is movable, a cover member to close the body member, means to hingedly connect the cover member by one end to a corresponding end of the body member, a link member 38 pivotally connected by one end to the bolt member and by its opposite end adjacent the free end portion of the cover member, the catch means being adapted to be affixed to the other container part adjacent the side wall of the body member having the entranceway opening therein, and said catch means having a projecting catch tongue 51 adapted to enter the body member through the entranceway opening thereof in the closed condition of the container parts, upswinging movement of the cover member being operative to cause the link member to retract the bolt member from catch tongue engaging position, and downswinging movement of the cover member being operative to cause the link member to move said bolt member into catch tongue engaging position. In the fastening position of the cover member the pivotal connection between the link member and the bolt member is beyond a dead centre position so that the bolt member cannot retract inadvertently. Movement of the bolt member in the retracting direction is assisted by a spring 43. The tongue 13 and the bolt member are both provided with cam edges 52, 53 which co-operate to draw the tongue inwardly into the body member and thereby cause the two parts of the container to be drawn tightly together. To retain the cover member in the fastening position a sliding bolt 55 is provided in the cover member; this is engageable with a notch 65 in a locking boss 64 on the body member when it is moved by means of a key the key engages between projections 57 on the bolt. The bolt 55 is provided with positioning notches 58 which co-operate with a stop nosing 59 under the urge of a spring arm 60 of the bolt.
