[Also in Division B5] A flexible sound and thermal insulating material comprises a cohesive cellular layer 2 of a material which is self-extinguishing, i.e. is not inflammable and will not support combustion, to one face of which is attached a layer 6 of flexible material, the exposed face of the flexible layer being smooth and the exposed face of the cohesive cellular layer being coated with a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive 3 which is self-extinguishing, the adhesive layer being provided with a release backing 4. The flexible layer 6 may be a vinyl coated cloth or a laminated material formed of a metal foil, e.g. aluminium foil, which may be perforated. mounted on a carrier layer 7, e.g. a non-inflammable treated paper or a kraft paper having a tensile strength of 20-60 pounds, which is caused to adhere to the cellular layer by, for example, a non-inflammable pressure-sensitive adhesive. The cellular layer may be an open or closed cell foam of neoprene, a vinyl compound, polyurethane foam with or without a plasticizer, polyurethane ether or ester foam having suitable phosphate or other plasticizer in sufficient quantities, a polyethylene ether or ester, or a polymer containing chlorine. The pressure-sensitive adhesive, which may be a foam, may be obtained by compounding chlorinated rubbery polymers, e.g. neoprene, with chlorinated plasticizers, e.g. chlorinated waxes and chlorinated resins, may incorporate a curing system which can be treated to render the adhesive bond permanent. The release backing may be a treated or silicone-coated paper.
