958,840. Centrifugal pumps. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 16, 1962 [June 6, 1961], No. 20339/61. Heading F1C. A voluteless pump, which may be used for lifting liquids in mixer-settler apparatus, comprises a first circular plate 6 with a central aperture 7 connected to a second circular plate 8 by blades 9 mounted on their edges between the plates and disposed about the central aperture 7 to draw liquid through the latter by centrifugal action, an operating stem 2 rotatable with the plates and blades and carried on that side of the second circular plate 8 remote from the first circular plate 7, and a substantially cylindrical casing 3 having an annular trough about its upper end and the impeller 1 suspended by the stem 2 near its lower end, so that the liquid is lifted by the impeller 1 to a point at which it can overflow into the trough. A reservoir 12 provided with an inlet 4 is separated from the impeller 1 by a partiton 10 provided with a central bore 11. The aperture 7, inlet 4 and bore 11 are all of the same diameter which is preferably one-third of the impeller diameter. Further, the impeller blade depth, the casing diameter and the clearance between the impeller and partition are preferably one-eigth, one and one-third, and not greater than one twentyfourth of the impeller diameter respectively.
