Abstract

958,573. Transistor switching circuits. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Oct. 13, 1960 [Oct. 13, 1959], No. 34626/59. Heading H3T. A switching circuit comprises a first transistor 4 with a driver 5 for switching it on and off and a second transistor 6 of opposite conductivity type the arrangement being such that when the first transistor 4 is on, the base electrodes and one of the other two electrodes of both transistors are at the same potential. Voltage sensitive means 8 are provided to be responsive to the potential at the one electrode of transistor 6 to cause the driver 5 to switch off transistor 4 when the potential at the one electrode exceeds a predetermined value. When transistor 4 is conducting, transistor 6 is out off, and current is supplied to load 1. An excess voltage across the emitter-collector path of transistor 4 is sensed by the means 8 which produces an output to switch transistor 4 off and transistor 6 on, thus reducing the input to the sensing means 8. Means may also be provided to operate a relay to disconnect the circuit from the supply if the potential at the emitter of transistor 6 falls below a specific value.
