Abstract
957,854. Separating liquid particles from gases. MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO. Aug. 14, 1962, No. 31138/62. Heading B1T. Apparatus for removing mist from a gas stream comprises a plurality of side by side contacting sections 3, 4, Fig. 3, each comprising alternate flat and channel-forming corrugated strips 1, 2 of absorbent material, e.g. asbestos, the alternate sections being inverted so as to be 180 degrees out of phase in relation to an adjacent section and the thickness of the strips 1, 2 differing slightly resulting in the flat strips 1 of any one section being staggered in relation to those of an adjacent section and the outer ends of the channels of the end sections being closed and the gas being compelled to flow through the apparatus in a direction transverse to said channels in a plurality of tortuous passages formed by said staggered strips and extending across the side edges of the flat and corrugated strips inside the apparatus. As shown, the sides as well as the ends of the apparatus are closed by a frame 5 leaving the upper and lower faces open. In a modification the apparatus is of circular cross-section. In a further modification the upper and lower faces together with the end faces are closed leaving the sides open and in a further modification the ends only are covered by caps 15, 16, Fig. 6, and the cylindrical side is supported by a foraminous screen 14.
