In up-twisting or doubling by withdrawing yarn or yarns overend from a package on a rotating spindle, the spindle is loaded by a mass, the moment of inertia of which together with that of the spindle is not less than that of the full cop, so that, at starting up, the total moment of inertia is at least twice as great, and is preferably three or four times as great, as the movement of inertia of the full package. As shown, the loading is effected by enclosing the packing with a cylindrical body 16 with or without a cover 18, the outside of the body being smooth or lacquered.
