Abstract

Purified sulphonates and alcohol sulphates having anti-rust properties are obtained from the raw mixtures produced by sulphonating sulphonatable materials and neutralizing the product with an alkali metal base in aqueous alcoholic solution, by treating said raw mixtures with at least 2% by weight thereof of a crystalline alkali metal nitrite to form a separable two phase system comprising an organic phase containing the sulphonates or organic sulphates and an aqueous phase containing metal salts, or a three phase system comprising additionally an oil phase, settling at 50 DEG -85 DEG C., separating the phases and distilling and drying the organic phase at 95 DEG -105 DEG C. For greater purification, the distillation step may be preceded by treating the separated organic phase (to which, if desired, a fluid oil is first added) with 20-25% of its weight of a 5-15% aqueous solution of an alkali metal nitrite while agitating and heating, and again settling at 50 DEG -85 DEG C. and separating the resulting aqueous and organic phases.
