Abstract
<PICT:0957640/C3/1> Water is freed electro-phoretically from solid particles, oil dispersions &c., by passing it through a di-electric solvent, preferably of higher specific gravity than water, while applying a high voltage electrostatic field, e.g. of 5-20 V. per cm. Preferably the water passes upwards through the body of the solvent, e.g. CHCl3 or CCl4, as fine droplets. A suitable apparatus consists of a vessel 11 containing the solvent 14 admitted through a pipe 12, through which the water to be treated flows upwards as droplets from a perforated member 21, connected to an inlet tube 20. The droplets rise through an opening 26 between an outer earthed electrode 25 coned at the lower end and joined to an upper cylindrical member, and an inner electrode 24 of similar configuration. Each electrode surface is provided with projecting triangular points 25a, 25b and 24a, 24b which are closely spaced and staggered formation. The inner electrode is connected to a high voltage D.C. supply through electrodes 37, 38, and current leakage to the upper pure water zone 50 is prevented by surrounding the electrode conduit by a tube 60 containing air. Impurities separate as a supernatant layer on the solvent and are drawn off at an outlet 46.
